Iron Maiden, released on April 14, 1980, is the debut album by heavy metal band, Iron Maiden. It was released by EMI in the UK, reaching number 4 in the UK album charts. The album was released a few months later in the US originally on Harvest/Capitol Records and subsequently Sanctuary Records/Columbia Records and included the song “Sanctuary”, which had been released in the UK only as a single, added to the track listing. In 1998, just like all other pre-X Factor albums, the album was re-released, and “Sanctuary” was added in all territories. Of all the songs in this album, “Phantom of the Opera,” “Running Free,” “Sanctuary” and “Iron Maiden” remain on the set lists of nearly all of the band’s concert tours, with the latter used to introduce a giant representation of the band’s mascot Eddie from the back of the stage. Four songs from the album: “Prowler”, “Remember Tomorrow”, “Running Free” and “Iron Maiden” were covered for the 2008 tribute album Maiden Heaven: A Tribute to Iron Maiden released by Kerrang! magazine. Every song on this album except ‘Strange World’ has since been recorded by the Dickinson-fronted line-up of the band, either on live albums, on studio B-Sides, or both. Paul Di’Anno – vocals Dave Murray – guitar Dennis Stratton – guitar, backing vocals Steve Harris – bass guitar, backing vocals Clive Burr – drums Lyrics: www.darklyrics.com

@EpicMachineSH Agree totally… Though i like the Maiden after those first 2 albums i think those 2 first albums are the real Maiden sound. My first albums from Maiden i bought in 1983…:) I think Paul Di’Anno was the best singer for Maiden. But that is my personal view. I like Bruce also but “Iron Maiden & Killers” are the Maiden albums for me.

@lusantlueg Have you seen the Early days documentary with maiden? There is an interview with Di’Anno where he says: “I was becoming depressed after a long time away from my family… Thats why i started with drugs and alchohol.
Later in the interview, Harris said he asked them if it was okay if he left. He just wanted to go back to his family.

Paul’s voice fitted really well to how Maiden sounded back then – They had a rawer, more punk-ish style on Iron Maiden and Killers, and in my opinion they wouldn’t have sounded as good if Bruce sang on them instead of Paul.

Maybe Bruce is better as a singer, but in Iron Maiden, imo, Di’Anno gives more predatory sound.
