ZEBRA – Who’s behind the door

Zebra is a hard rock band that came together in 1975 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It features Randy Jackson (vocals/guitar), Felix Hanemann more…(bass/keyboards) and Guy Gelso (drums). Their mainstream debut on Atlantic Records was in 1983, highlighted by the singles “Tell Me What You Want” and “Who’s Behind The Door”. Like Twisted Sister, Zebra cut their teeth on the East Coast club circuit, frequently playing at clubs on Long Island, NY. Zebra started their career by playing covers of Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues and Rush songs: it was their early fans’ reaction to their Led Zeppelin renditions that helped convince the band to bring their act to New York. They had introduced their original material into their cover sets years before they were signed to Atlantic Records, including “The La La Song”, “Free” and “Bears” (originally entitled “The Bears are Hibernating”). Zebra had been noticed as an original act to contend with by local colleges and even had some of their early original performances recorded by Long Island FM radio station WBAB, culminating in the inclusion of one of their songs on a release of “wbab’s Homegrown Album”, which commemorated some of the station’s best local acts and performances culled from their on-air “Homegrown Hour” program. The band continued to tour throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and in 2003 released their first album of all-new material since 1986. A DVD of recent live performances, mostly from a show at the House of Blues in New Orleans, was released in the summer of 2007.

i remember being little growing up listing to Zebra. Shit i remember seeing randy more times than i can count all around long island. These guys never got the recognition they deserved!

Ahhh…..Good Memories, I went to school with one of their roadies. A nyway, great and talented band-even if they never got the true recognition that they are due.

It’s actually “How do WE have the nerve” which makes more sense to your interpretation anyway. Great song, great band. They started as a Zeppelin tribute band down here in the NOLA region, and went a long way from here!

I like them both—and the older I get, I appreciate them even more.

Although I agree that this song has a positive message, I also think on some level it carries a warning for us. Lyrics like “What do they think of you, animals in their zoo,” “How do they have the nerve, we’re animals in preserve” and “where does the circle end, who are the unwatched men” speak to humans oppressing other humans and how God is watching, but how we should be vigilant as well.” That’s just my interpretation, It’s a song with a tremendous amount of meaning.

this song has always made me feel something strong, I don’t know what it is. If the song is about how death is not the end but the beginning of another journey. And it makes me reflect on my life and how foolish I’ve been and still can be to be angry and overlooking the wonder and beauty of simply being alive. It pushes that button thats been planted in our hearts by our Creator, makes me want to celebrate, to cry, to get on my knees and say “thank You!” and “I love you!”

    Pretty trippy huh

Kick ass band, saw them in 1980 at ole man rivers, and at the warehouse in new orleans. 1 of the best bands ever to grace the airways.

  13. opus3361 Says:

….fabulous tune….a three man band that’s better than most four man bands!!

….saw Zebra live for the first time in the summer of ‘81…playing at a HUGE rock-club in Staten Island called “Snoopy’s”. I had a seat at the bar…front & center of the stage…and was mesmerized the second they started to play. Craziest thing about it all was that they were the opening act….for Twisted Sister that night.

@RUGER480REDHAWK Zebra sounds a lot like Zepplin. Zepplin influenced Randy Jackson quite a bit. Queensryche and Zebra are both technical though.
